Rock Hill Community Recovers from Hail Storm with Local Support

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A hail storm that swept through the south side of Rock Hill a few months ago took many residents by surprise, resulting in significant damage to homes, vehicles, and businesses. In the wake of this disaster, local organizations stepped forward to assist those affected.

In June, Habitat for Humanity of York County committed $250,000 to renovate homes for residents lacking insurance coverage, demonstrating the potential of community action backed by private efforts.

CEO Tim Veeck reported that the organization initially aimed to assist 15 families but successfully expanded its capacity to help nearly 30 families. “We focused on repairs like roofing, siding, and windows. Some homes required complete replacements of their HVAC systems, and we also addressed damage to ceilings and drywall,” Veeck explained.

Today, as one drives through the south side of Rock Hill, many homes exhibit new siding, windows, and roofs. Local residents express relief, noting that the storm is now just a memory.

“I received a new roof, shingles, and new window fixtures,” shared Rock Hill resident Bobby Stevenson.

Ruth Perkins, another neighbor, recalled the storm’s destructive impact: “We had significant tears in the siding, and the roof was destroyed. We witnessed our cars sustain damage as well.” Despite the challenges, Perkins highlighted the community’s resilience, stating, “I think in a way it’s brought our neighborhood together.”

Habitat for Humanity anticipates completing all restoration work in the coming weeks, underscoring the community’s commitment to personal responsibility and proactive recovery efforts.
