Heres what we know on the skeletal remains in Camden

December 10, 2024

The remains have been sent to Spartanburg County for rapid testing and people have been asked to give DNA samples

CAMDEN, S.C. — Authorities in Kershaw County are currently conducting an investigation following the discovery of skeletal remains on Tuesday evening by two children who were playing in the woods along East York Street.

“There are many uncertainties at this stage, but we are committed to uncovering the truth for the family of whoever this may be,” stated Kershaw Sheriff Lee Boan.

The children, who were riding bikes on trails in the wooded area, stumbled upon a skull during their ride.

“We had a couple of kids riding on some trails and temporarily lost their way, leading them to discover the skeletal remains,” Sheriff Boan noted.

Additional bones were located scattered throughout the area, with no burial site in proximity.

“They were young kids, and I can only imagine how shaken they were; the skull was quite visible, and that’s what drew their attention,” Boan added.

The remains have been transported to Spartanburg County for rapid DNA testing.

Authorities report that several individuals have reached out, expressing concern that the remains may belong to their missing relatives.

“We’ve already had people call; I just spoke with a nearby police chief regarding a missing person case. Until the remains are identified, it’s natural for families to inquire and connect with us about potential matches. At this point, we cannot rule anyone out,” Boan remarked.

Kershaw County Coroner David West confirmed that DNA samples from potential family members have been collected.

“We gathered all that we could from the remains and transported them to Spartanburg County this morning. We also brought along a few family members who we believe may be connected, for swabbing purposes,” West explained.

Boan expressed hope for a positive identification within the next week or two. Once identification is confirmed, officials will begin to investigate the cause of death.
