A fast-moving fire shut down Farrow Road and drew a major emergency response to a Columbia waste facility—here’s what we know so far.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia-Richland Fire crews have contained a two-alarm fire that erupted Sunday afternoon at a waste management facility on Farrow Road.
A department spokesperson said the fire was reported at GFL Environmental at 7800 Farrow Road around 3:15 p.m. Fire crews initially had to fight the fire from the outside and upgraded it to two alarms due to how fast it was spreading. They also shut down Farrow Road north of the I-20 interchange in both directions.
As of 5 p.m., crews were still on the scene, and Farrow Road was shut down. The road reopened later in the day. Four workers were at the facility when the fire broke out, but officials said no injuries were reported.
The Richland County Fire Marshal’s office will investigate the cause. Fire officials said health and environmental officials were also notified of the fire since the location is a waste disposal facility.
